My clients had lived with this garden for fifteen months, having already had it rebuilt once. It still didn’t feel like theirs.
The plot is a townhouse facing the lake, with neighbours close on either side and an outdated kidney-shaped pool taking up most of the space. They felt overlooked every time they stepped outside. They also had a view they had no intention of giving up.
They had been let down by contractors before, so trust had to come before anything could be drawn. I spent the early part of this project listening: to what they wanted and what they were worried would go wrong again. What came from that is a garden that feels unmistakably theirs.
The pool was a difficult conversation. It was the largest element in the garden and the least suited to it. What replaced it is smaller, orientated to the water and edged with seat ledges, so my clients and their growing family can sit with the lake in front of them in a space that’s entire;y their own.
Screening was the other priority and it had to be selective. In a garden this size everything is visible at once, so the layering needed enough height to close off the neighbours without closing off the lake. The lake is salt-water which brings wind and salt-laden air across the plot, so the planting was chosen specifically to perform in those conditions.
