My clients were first time homeowners who had just finished a substantial home renovation. By the time they reached the garden they were exhausted by the whole thing and relieved to hand it to someone experienced who could take it all off their hands.
The brief was a familiar one in Dubai: pool, lawn, outdoor kitchen, shower, shade and room to entertain. It also had to survive two children who are mad about cricket and football and two Beagles who loved to dig.
They handed the whole thing over and never had to think about it again.
The challenge was space. The extension on this freestanding villa had taken a good portion of the garden with it and the doors onto the garden made the rest of the brief impossible as they stood. Replacing them with sliding doors was the decision that unlocked everything else.
My clients went away for the summer and came back to a finished garden. Nothing on their list was cut. The pool, the lawn, the kitchen and the shaded seating sit within one coherent space rather than competing for it.
The planting had to withstand two children, two dogs and a hard Dubai summer, so it was chosen for durability first.
